Practical Faith for Practical People

Last night I took a number of youth and adults to the “Church basement roadshow” at American University.  It was a thing that was hosted by Wesley Seminary and had the makings of greatness.  This was an “Emergent” event with a couple of really awesome guys leading it.

I took away from the experience a feeling of wonderment by the way that they were all great story tellers.  They really owned the “parts” that they were playing as they read excerpts from their books.  At first glance the light and fun mood took my attention, but upon further reflection there was such a didactic feel to the carefully crafted presentations I was drawn in even further.

At the close of the evening I talked with the students about what they thought of the experience.  They shared thoughts of new perspectives gained and questioned some of the statements.  I told them that there have been a lot of people hurt or turned off by the church and these guys and the “Emergent” movement are trying to reconnect these people with what it is to be a person of faith.

Overall it was a fun evening, if for nothing more than an excuse to pack a bunch of students, my wife and daughter into the church van and hang out.  Also i got to see some friends from seminary too.
