Leadership: A slow coming revelation

System-PreferencesSo the past couple of weeks have allowed me to come to a better articulate a revelation.  In listening to groups cast vision and set course for the direction and things that their ministry will take them i have been struck by the power of framing.  The way that the leaders frame directions and visions will set the tone for their whole ministry as it seeks to live into the changes and advances of the larger church’s ministry.  This can be a super powerful thing and it can also be a very destructive thing.  I guess it just reaffirms to me the implications of being in leadership… PEOPLE ACTUALLY LISTEN TO YOU (even if they are throwing spitballs during your youth talk or falling asleep during the sermon some how the message gets through).

New Discipline: “it’ll be there tomorrow”

Activity-MonitorSo for the past week or so, ever since last week’s clergy retreat on boundaries, I have tried something new.  I have been leaving my messenger bag with all of my work and laptop at work or just not bring it in the house.  not having my laptop in the evenings has allowed me to have uninterrupted time with Eden and Katie.  When Eden goes to bed, I read some personal books or have some devo time rather than getting of facebook or design websites.

I have felt really good about it.  Last night after a meeting i was telling one of our leaders about it and he said he was going to stay late at work, but after second thought he said “it’ll be there for me tomorrow.”  So I in my efforts to be more fully present during my at home time i am taking up the spiritual discipline of “It’ll still be there tomorrow.”

Katie’s new diapers and deadlines

 Cupojoe

As my Eden turns 2 years old, I have taken a moment to reflect on the things I have learned in two years of motherhood. Here they are:

  • Babies go through more diapers than you think humanly possible, so always pack more than you think he or she could ever use.
  • Never give your child something to eat in the car that you don’t want to find weeks later under your seat.
  • Play dates are a wonderful idea in theory, but in practice, bring ice and tissues — bumps and tears are mandatory.
  • Leaving the diaper bag in the car actually causes your child to have a blowout.
  • Apple juice ferments quickly in a Sippy cup left hidden in the cushions of the couch. And it will make your toddler tipsy.

Am I so easily won over?

Pictures As I was getting ready for worship today I was flitting back and forth from my office as I usually do.  I find my time on Sunday mornings split between unlocking the building, setting up the media stuff, communion elements, wrangling Eden (when she is with me), being asked  questions, making up answers, remembering where the rope to my robe went…the list goes on.

Usually I am focused and determined to check off the next thing that is on my list.  But something stopped me in my tracks when i went into my office and saw a 2 little pieces of heaven sitting on my desk. They were the most beautiful things I had ever seen before 8:30 on a Sunday morning…

    Relationships Unfiltered

I just picked up the new Andrew Root book the other day called Relationships unfiltered. His first book, Revisiting Relational Youth Ministry, is a great read.  This new book is a more accessible version of the first.  It is not better or worse just “condensed” as root puts it.  I am going to be trying to write reviews of some of the books that i have read as a resource for youth workers.

This book looks to take an honest look into why we want to be in relationship with youth.  The first one compared this with some of the theology of Dietrich Bonheoffer.  This new book doesn’t have that comparison, but I am looking forward for  “Relationships Unfiltered” to be a resource for my volunteers.

I will keep you posted with another post when I finish.

Look Ma I’m on the Internet

A couple of weeks ago we began videoing our sermons and posting them to our church site @mtownumc.org

Now we are thinking of how to best use it to expand our connections.

Kind of nice to be able to post a video rather than just text of my sermons now though.   :-) ENjoy

How Youth Ministry Can Ruin The Church

Some conversation with the rest of the staff has gotten me thinking about some of the pitfalls of the way that youth ministry is done. As clergy we were talking about how churches in our area are moving away from a ministry of convenience to a ministry that seeks depth.  They have been doing this by eliminating or shifting weekend services so that there is a dedicated Sunday School hour.  This allows everyone to participate in both worship and Christian education.  We have seen a number of young people going to Sunday school while mom and dad are in worship.  While this a convenient offering the kids then don’t know what it is to be in worship.  When they are expected to make worship a central part of their faith life as they grow up they don’t know how to worship corporately.

There is a real benefit in having everyone together for worship and there being no break down in ages.  It can make for a great well rounded understanding of the body of Christ and community.  the hard part is that it demands worship to be a place where all can connect through music, message and other pieces of the service.  This is truly a daunting task from week to week.  Also, the congregation needs to be open to a variety of diversity within the worship experience knowing that one style will not fit everyone.

The other side is that you would have youth and children’s worship that would be in another part of the building at the same time and mom and dad worship or at another time.  Yet here these kinds of worship tend to take on a very different face than “big Church” on Sunday mornings.

As youth workers we have to always keep an eye on how we are transitioning our young people into the next stages of their spiritual journey.   How are we giving them the tools to find a church that they connect with and can find places to serve in College, as they begin a family and as they move into middle age.  Part of the church drop off of high school grads is because we have failed to do an effective job of transition our youth.  Another part is that the church finds it hard to communicate in a way that these young people understand too.

Worship and integration into the larger church body is a challenge that we have to be mindful of so that we are not just a successful youth ministry but we are a thriving church today and tomorrow.  We shouldn’t be afraid to be all together in worship (at least once and a while), or invite our youth to take up positions of leadership just as our adults do.

We let our youth lead “big Church”, run the computers and sound board, preach, and serve, but I know we can do better.

    How are you doing this?

Here is a book that is some good food for thought too.  :-)   thanks for reading

Who do YOU say that I am

lifeforce growThis week at our Young adult Bible Study we are beginning our new study on They Like Jesus but Not the Church.  I am excited about the conversation that will come from the study.

This week we are going to be talking about Who we say Jesus is.  Through out scripture Jesus is referred to as the “Son of God” and the “Son of Man.”  Both are important and both give us very different understandings as to who Jesus is.

If you have a minute let me know your thoughts on one or both of the titles.  It might make for some good conversation on Thursday evening when we talk it out and then I can get back to you with what the small group thought.

What does it mean for you to say Jesus is the Son of God?

What about when you say He is the Son of Man?

How are they the same or different?
