Hi Chris, I am not sure how I found this blog from facebook but just reading your post made me tired. I am so sorry about the roof but I am glad no one was injured. I will put you guys on my/the church prayer list. Hang in there, I know you know that God has it all covered but life can wear on you when things pile up. Let me know if there is anything I can do from Pinch, WV!

Hey Chris,
Enjoyed the Fith Lab 7 Things. Needed to hear the part about when one of these awsome, comes to church very active kids does something totally out of character, and they stop being active in Youth Group, to not give up, and hang in there with them!
                        Thanks, Rajeana

Cathy,
Thanks for your thoughts. There is always a couple of layers that we have to peel back to get at the heart of what Jesus ways saying. I love the way Jesus took things poeple understood and allowed them to view them from a different angle. Caesar was a son of the gods, but the early Church came to know Jesus as THE Son of GOD.
Kind of like the way early hymns were put to the tune of pub songs because everyone already knew how to sing them while sober or drunk. Why not add good lyrics to a tune that is known and sing our faith? Context and location are always so important.

So I've been reading this book "Jesus For President" by Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw about how Jesus was political in his message and how he taught. Too often we as modern day Christians forget about the politics of the time and the culture in which Jesus lived and taught as we try to understand Scripture. The history of the Jews and Jesus' time are areas that I have been trying to gain a better understanding of lately and this book has indeed enlightened me.
My answers to the aforementioned questions can be expounded with a little knowledge of history now. Although Jesus was seen as opposing Caesar it was not necessarily in the ways we often think of. Yes, his kingdom was a much different one that he set out to establish, but his teaching was definitely of the times. "Son of God" was a popular title given to kings and emperors. These were thought to be appointed by God(god)to rule. While, we know Jesus was without a doubt sent by God to rule a different kingdom the Jews and Romans didn't get that yet. Jesus was very clever at using the imagery of the times to establish his kingdom all the while wreaking havoc with the Romans and Jews.

I honestly like this idea. It would work for me, but I don't exactly see myself going over 80 on a highway or blasting Beethoven on the Golden Mile (well... that I could see.) But some kids my age just don't HAVE responsiblity, and this may be an easy fix; however, kids still need to be taught things in life. So I guess I'm so-so.

Instantly I think of my cousin, just turning 16 and getting a car... which normally makes me cringe. So this seems to be a great solution to irresponsible driving... until I realize that almost all my "responsibility" was learned from mistakes. If we don't have a personal reference that impacts you in a way to take more care, it seems less likely that care will thrive when those training wheels are taken off. I still remember my first accident in college. I wasn't even going 25 mph down a wet main street but incidentally rear-ended a Jeep when he stopped for a pedestrian. I learned the person in front of me doesn't always do what you expect.

My friend, I have enjoyed this post. I also live in San Diego, although I have never been to this church plant. I'm glad to hear that there is a group trying to reach people in San Diego. Y'all keep up the good work!

As to your question on evangelism and discipleship, I think a church should go all out for evangelism, and mentor for discipleship. It would take some work and some willingness on the part of the old and young to make it work, but it's the only bona fide youth ministry in the Bible (although I don't know how old Timothy, Titus, Mark, et al were when they started).
