1 Corinthians 13 paraphrased for youth workers » JakeBouma.com

This is a great post from a a guy who knows a thing or two about youth ministry (or can fake it well :-) ). I thought that ti was a fun post, and a passage that we should all read before every day to seek being made perfect in love.

A couple of days after…

survivor retreat (28 of 202)

After a crazy couple of days of retreating it seems like some of the wildness has calmed down. Now we have Vacation bible school going on and that is a ton of fun too. There was all kinds of wild stuff that went on and a great deal of messiness as well.

Go to lifeforceyouth.com to check out the rest of the pics from the retreat.

I was really impressed to see that some of the students even made it to church on Sunday after the sleepless night…. Read the rest of this entry »

I have awesome kids

June 30th, 2008

So a couple of our students went with a couple of youth workers to creation this past week. And even more people at home were praying that Cathy and Bernie made it through.

Anyway, one day last week a couple of the girls swiped a book out of my office and took it to Creation with them. They then sought out Duffy Robbins, one of the coauthors who was speaking at Creation, and asked him to sign the book for me.

The girls “presented” me with the book on Sunday and i discovered the blessing that he had signed it and I was thought about during Creation.

:-)

This week at church we have a choir camp going on that is doing a play called “Are We there yet?” It chronicles the journey of moses from baby adrift in the river to the triumphant entry to the promise land.

As I read through the scrip so that i could do a little devo with the kids today I thought about the way that Moses was a really great pastor. I was reminded of the willingness he had to serve and go out on a limb for God.

Thought then filled my mind of what kind of youth worker Moses would have been. I think that it would be fun to do a series of posts about ministry learnings from Moses…like would Moses have had wii and PS3 in his ministry to draw kids in? Well he did have some show stopping performances (with God’s help) like the stick truing into a snake thing and others. Or how about one on dealing with unruly kids…Moses style. What to do when you turn your back for one second and the next thing you know you have a golden calf in the youth room?

I think that there is some potential there…

Come to worship this Saturday for the play and be inspired to add to possible posts.

The Live Bible

June 15th, 2008

I am really excited to see what happens with this bible I just printed the sample off to read and think about. I have high hopes of this being something that we can give our incoming 6th or 9th graders. Or maybe after confirmation, or maybe graduation from HS. We will see. there has been tons of talk about this Bible for some time now.

I think that it would lend itself to

That’s because as teens dive in, they’ll come face to face with hundreds of …

Trying something new

June 9th, 2008

In conversation with the youth team and where we feel like our ministry is going, we have started a subscription with youthtracker.net to begin tracking student participation in the ministry so that we can better communicate and follow-up with our students.  I think that this is going to be a great thing for our ministry.

Sunday I let Sayre have at entering data and she got 116 names and addresses into the system.  Holy Cow!!! that is a really great start

It’s been 19 years since a swashbuckling Indiana Jones smashed through the box office and entertained big screen viewers with his mix of intelligence, sarcasm and action-packed adventure. Though many of today’s teens have never seen the series of Indy adventures their parents came of age watching, Jones’ return in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has the potential to change all that.

I can’t wait

office after sayreThis is really my office…I promise.  I let Sayre loose on the task of tackling the job of getting me back in order after my office had fallen into with i would like to call a “cozy disarray”.  Now not only is it manageable, user friendly and easy on the eyes, but everything is labeled and color coded.  You should see inside my filing cabinet…pristine.   This is awesome.  I am going to try hard to keep it this way.

My next mission is to try and cover the walls with bulletin board.

Thanks Sayre and friends.

Our Girls

April 9th, 2008

There are time in our ministry both positive and negative when I think about some of the students in our ministry and the way that they see themselves. Also, I my youthworker training event a couple of weeks ago I talked a bit about where young people gain their identity and came across this article.

It is geared to the girls but it doesn’t take much to connect with the guys too.

Fuel this weekend

April 7th, 2008

fuel logoI am excited about our youth lead worship service more than ever this week.  I just began to seriously put together my talk, the bulletin and the table talk discussion guide and I am really excited.  This is the first week that we are going to be having the vast majority of the music done by our newly formed youth band Pumped (Eduardo and I kind of wanted thier name to be GAS, but we can’t win them all).

Worship is at like 6:40 on Sunday night in the sanctuary, so stop on by if you would like to partake.
